LT Meade

LT Meade , actually Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith (* 1854 in Bandon , County Cork , † 1914 ), was an Irish writer who wrote numerous short stories for children as well as detective novels in the course of her life. She is considered to be the first English-speaking author in whose crime novels medical aspects and / or forensics play an essential role. In order to represent medical facts correctly, she worked with Robert Eustace , among others , who later also cooperated with crime novelist Dorothy Sayers .

Life

Meade was born in 1854 (according to other sources, 1844) in County Cork, southwest Ireland, to a pastor's daughter. She married Alfred Toulmin Smith in September 1879 and lived most of her life in London .

Meade began writing at the age of 17 and wrote a total of over 300 novels. She left behind such a great work that eleven other novels were published for the first time after her death. She is still known today for her youth books, the best known of which was A World of Girls , published in 1886 . In addition, she wrote romance novels as well as sensational stories, historical novels, adventure stories and ultimately crime novels. When writing detective novels, she cooperated with other authors or enlisted the help of experts. From 1893 she initially worked with a Dr. Clifford Halifax together. Six crime novels stem from this collaboration. A year later she worked with Robert Eustace, with whom she wrote eleven detective novels together. What is notable about working with Eustace is the introduction of two female villains: Madame Sara in The Sorceress of the Strand and Madame Koluchy, the mastermind of a gang of gangsters in The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings .
