Darren John Purse (born February 14, 1977 in London ) is a former English football player.

Career

society

Purse was born in 1977 in Stepney , London , and attended Cardinal Pole Catholic School in Hackney . In his youth he was a supporter of Millwall FC and his role model was Arsenal player Tony Adams . He played in the same "Sunday League" as Lee Bowyer , received offers from Arsenal FC and Tottenham Hotspur , which he turned down in order to graduate from school. In 1994, when he was seventeen, he signed his first professional contract with Leyton Orient and made his debut three days later. After a brief loan period in Finland at Vasa IFK , he moved in 1996 for 100,000 pounds sterling to Oxford United .

After playing 59 league games in eighteen months, he moved to Birmingham City in February 1998 . There he had some notable successes, such as reaching the final in the 2001 League Cup . Against Liverpool they were behind after 30 minutes with a goal from Robbie Fowler , until Purse and his team scored the 1-1 in stoppage time saved up to the penalty shootout. He could also be relied on in the penalty shoot-out, but the League Cup still went 5-4 to Liverpool in the end. With Birmingham he was also promoted to the Premier League in the 2002/03 season. After more than 160 league games for the "Blues", he moved to West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2004 for 750,000 pounds .

After only one season and 22 league games for West Brom, he signed a contract with Cardiff City in July 2005 and was immediately named captain. Due to his combative attitude, he was held in high regard by the fans and formed a stable central defense with Glenn Loovens . In July 2007, he destroyed all rumors and speculations by extending his expiring contract for another year. On August 28, 2007, he got a cartilage damage to his knee during the League Cup game against Leyton Orient . After an expected forced break of three to four weeks, he suffered an infection on his newly operated knee and was therefore unable to work for a longer period of time. It wasn't until October that he made his comeback against Wolverhampton Wanderers . In the 2007/08 season Purse was replaced in central defense by Roger Johnson and had to spend most of the games on the bench. But after Glenn Loovens was sold to Celtic Glasgow in August 2008 , he had his regular seat back. But three months later, the Hungarian took Gábor Gyepes , as he did not play a good game in the 2-1 loss to Plymouth Argyle . Purse countered with criticism of his coach and said he didn't deserve to sit on the bench. In January 2009 he announced that he wanted to leave the club for Norwich, but a change in the winter transfer period to Norwich City did not materialize. At the end of the season Purse was not offered a new contract and so he left the club in summer 2009.

For the 2009/10 season he came to Sheffield Wednesday and was also elected captain there. He made his debut on matchday 1 in a 2-2 draw against Barnsley FC . His first goal came on October 17 in a 2-0 win over Coventry City . There he was used regularly, but in January 2011 his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

Just one day after the contract was terminated, he signed a contract with his favorite club, Millwall FC . Two days later, he played his first game in the Millwall shirt in a 4-2 loss to Leicester City . He scored his first goal of the season in a 4-0 win over Preston North End on April 23 . After he had no chance of a regular place at the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Purse was therefore awarded to Yeovil Town for a month on October 21 . He played five league games that month and coach Terry Skiverton asked for an extension of the loan period. Since this did not follow, Purse was awarded again in November. This time until January 2012 to Plymouth Argyle , with the option of an 18 month contract while the winter transfer window is open. On January 5th this option was also drawn and Purse signed a contract until the end of the 2011/12 season. After he was elected captain for the 2012/13 season and suddenly appeared on the transfer list in December 2012 to finance some signings for the club for the second half of the season, he moved to Port Vale in January 2013 .

In his debut game for Port Vale he was voted “Man of the Match” and completed 17 league games for the club by the end of the season. Despite his good performance, it was decided against a contract extension due to his old age.

After Purse trained at Northampton Town in between , he signed a contract with the Finnish club IFK Mariehamn in August 2013 until the end of the year. After the contract expired in December 2013, he was signed by the amateur club Chesham United in January 2014 . With Chesham he reached a place for the play-offs at the end of the season, but failed there with 1: 3 at St. Albans City .

National team

In 1998 Purse belonged to the squad of the English U-21 national team and was used in two games that year.
