The IFK Mariehamn ( Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna Mariehamn ; German  sports companionship Mariehamn ) is a Finnish football club in Mariehamn region Aland .

history

IFK Mariehamn was founded in 1919, but the football department did not emerge until the 1930s. Initially, the team only took part in local tournaments, it was not until 1945 that they played in the Finnish league system. At first they only appeared in a lower class, at the end of 1971 they were promoted to the second Finnish league for the first time. However, the club had to relegate and only returned to the 1977 season. After the league could just be managed in the first year, they rose again in the following year.

From 1979 to 1990 IFK Mariehamn played third class before they even had to compete in the fourth division in 1991 and 1992. From 1993 the club went back to the third division and in 2003 managed to move up to the second division ( Ykkönen ). There the club was runner-up and prevailed in the relegation games against FC Jazz Pori with 1-0 and 2-2, making the direct march into the Finnish upper house, the Veikkausliiga , succeeded. As table twelfth, the league could be made. Since then, the club has stayed in the league and finished fourth in 2009, 2012 and 2013, each of its best final placements.

In 2012, Mariehamn qualified as a fair play winner for the first time for the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League .

On October 23, 2016, Mariehamn secured the Finnish championship with a 2-1 win over Tampereen Ilves . It is the first championship title in the club's history.
