Daniel Sjölund (born April 22, 1983 in Mariehamn ) is a Finnish football player . The midfielder , who made his debut for the Finnish national team in 2003 , is the older brother of Finnish national player Annica Sjölund .
Career
In the club
Sjölund played in his youth at IF Finströms Kamraterna and IFK Mariehamn . After making his debut in the club's men's team, he moved to the Swedish second division club IF Brommapojkarna in the summer of 1999 . The young player played there for six months before the English club West Ham United accepted him into The Academy . After a year he switched to Liverpool in exchange with Rigobert Song , who also received around two million pounds.
At Liverpool FC Sjölund could not prevail against Emile Heskey , Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen and was only used in the reserve team. Before the start of the Allsvenskan season in 2003 , the Swedish club Djurgårdens IF loaned him until the end of the season. In Sweden, the youngster convinced and won the championship title with the club at the end of the season, after which he was signed permanently. At the side of players like Matías Concha , Fredrik Stenman and Toni Kuivasto , he missed the title defense with the team in the following season as fourth in the table, but reached the final of the Swedish National Cup against IFK Gothenburg with the club . With two goals he helped the club to win the title in a 3-1 win.
In the 2005 season Sjölund finally matured under coach Kjell Jonevret to become a regular player and played 22 season games. With seven goals this season he contributed to the renewed win of the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national champions. In addition, he moved with the team to Pa Dembo Tourray , Markus Johannesson and Tobias Hysén again into a cup final, in which by a 2: 0 victory against Åtvidabergs FF the Double winning succeeded.
Before the start of the 2006 season, Sjölund extended his contract by four years until the end of 2009. In the following period he was still a regular player before he injured himself in early 2008 and missed the first half of the season. After his return he established himself again in the regular lineup. In the 2009 season he was in danger of relegation with the club, after an injury to his knee in September of that year he could not help the team. After the successful relegation, he extended his contract for another three years in January 2010. After a long time without a proper diagnosis due to injury at the beginning of 2010, he was operated on on his foot in May 2010. In July of that year he returned to the football field as a substitute and soon after regained his regular place.
National team
His breakthrough at Djurgårdens brought him his first invitation to the Finnish national team in 2003 . On May 22, 2003 Daniel Sjölund celebrated his debut in the national team in the 2-0 defeat against Norway .
