Markus Johannesson (born May 29, 1975 in Rölanda ) is a former Swedish football player . The defender , who won several titles in Sweden with Örgryte IS and Djurgårdens IF , played once for the Swedish national team in 2001 .

Career

Johannesson played in his youth with Rölanda IF , Eds FF and IK Oddevold . With the men's team of the club, he won the southern season of Division 1 in 1995 and rose to the Allsvenskan . At the end of the first division season in 1996 , he rose directly from the club again. He then joined the league rivals Örgryte IS . At the side of Jozo Matovac , Henrik Bertilsson and Anders Prytz , he reached the semifinals of the Svenska Cup with the club , in which the team failed on penalties at AIK .

While Johannesson slipped into the relegation battle with the club in the following year and after a coach change - Erik Hamrén replaced Bo Backman in the summer - in the relegation games against Umeå FC secured relegation with two wins, the team reached the cup final. Against Helsingborgs IF , Stefan Vennberg scored a 1-1 draw on both legs , and the team again lost out on penalties. In the 1999 season Hamrén kept the club on the road to success and led him to fourth in the UEFA Cup . At the side of Dick Last , David Marek , Martin Ulander and Christian Hemberg , the team only finished seventh in the following season and failed in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup in the first round at the Austrian club SK Rapid Wien , succeeded in the national cup but the renewed entry into the finals. After two goals by Marcus Allbäck in the final first leg in a 2-0 away win in the first leg, it was enough for Johannesson and his team to triumph again despite a 0-1 defeat in the second leg.

Johannesson's performances at his club caught the attention of the national coaching duo Tommy Söderberg and Lars Lagerbäck . On January 31, 2001, Johannesson came to his only use in the jersey of the Swedish national team. The game against the Faroese national football team ended in a 0-0 draw. In the following years he played with the team around Afonso Alves , Robert Bengtsson-Bärkroth , Paulinho Guará and Jeffrey Aubynn in the front division with, without being able to intervene in the fight for the championship.

In the summer of 2004 Johannesson moved within the Allsvenskan to the Stockholm club Djurgårdens IF , where he signed a four and a half year contract. With the reigning champions, he finished fourth in the table after 13 appearances at the end of his first half-series, but reached the final of the national cup with the club. He was in the starting line-up in the 3-1 win over IFK Göteborg with goals from Andreas Johansson and two-time goalscorer Daniel Sjölund with a goal from Niclas Alexandersson . The following year he was named team captain and played in 24 of the 26 season games. He made a decisive contribution to winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national champions. Again he reached the cup final with the club, where goals from Toni Kuivasto and Tobias Hysén against Åtvidabergs FF won the double . In the following years he was one of the pillars of the club as captain.

In the 2009 season , Johanesson and his club were in danger of relegation. When he beat last year's champions Kalmar FF 2-0 in November of that year, he scored his first Allsvenskan goal for his employer, which helped him reach the relegation games. In the relegation games against Assyriska Föreningen the league was successful. These were the defensive player's last games for Djurgårdens IF after he announced his retirement at the end of the season in September of that year.
