Gábor Gyepes (born June 26, 1981 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian football player . The 1.91-meter-long, robust central defender and current national player from his country was on the verge of losing his career after a cruciate ligament rupture in 2006, and celebrated his “comeback” in January 2008 after 18 months.

Club career

Gyepes learned to play football from the age of eight at the local club Ferencváros Budapest and was used in almost all possible field player positions. The later defender came mostly on the offensive in his last year in the youth team and scored 20 goals in the last 16 games alone. In 1999 Gyepes , who was also talented in tennis, made his debut in the professional team of the "FTC" and from the 2000/01 season he established himself more and more in the regular formation. Between 2001 and 2004 he won two Hungarian championships, two national cup trophies and once the Hungarian Supercup, whereby a serious knee injury forced him to take a year-long break in the 2003/04 season. In addition, he gained his first experience in European club football through his participation in the qualification for the Champions League and after the defeat there against Sparta Prague he dueled in the UEFA Cup with FC Millwall and in the group stage with Feyenoord Rotterdam , FC Schalke 04 , FC Basel and Heart of Midlothian .

In July 2005 Gyepes denied a one-week trial training with English second division Wolverhampton Wanderers and joined the club initially for six months on loan. In the 5-1 win against Chester City he celebrated his debut in the League Cup on August 23, 2005 and since he formed a good duo in central defense with Joleon Lescott , coach Glenn Hoddle took him on in December 2005 for 400,000 pounds for 2½ years under contract. The deal itself became a public issue again at the beginning of 2007, when the national soccer association FA Gyepes' player agent Sam Stapleton had accused him of providing false bank details - Stapleton had already pleaded guilty to this in October 2006. In terms of sport, Gyepes suffered a severe setback when his cruciate ligament tore on March 25, 2006 in the 3-1 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday . He was undergoing an operation and there was a not unlikely chance that he would never play professional football again. With the exception of a game for the reserve team in February 2007, he paused well into 2007 and in April 2007 the contract with the "Wolves" was terminated - he continued the rehabilitation program in his Hungarian homeland.

After restoring fitness, Gyepes returned to England, where he first tried his luck with the Queens Park Rangers , where his compatriot Ákos Buzsáky already played, for whom Gyepes' agent also worked. Since the club initially only offered him a perspective on the reserve team, he instead signed a contract running until the end of the 2007/08 season in January 2008 with third division club Northampton Town . There he worked again with Stuart Gray , whom he still knew as an assistant coach from his time in Wolverhampton. Gyepes played a total of 15 league games for the "Cobblers" and in April 2008 he agreed with the club's management on a contract extension until the end of the 2008/09 season. The contract contained a release clause for a change, which, according to the media, could be activated at a transfer fee of around £ 200,000.

On August 19, 2008 he moved to Cardiff City in the Football League Championship , where he was primarily to replace Glenn Loovens, who had recently migrated to Celtic Glasgow . He played his first game on October 25, 2008 for the Welsh capital club against Nottingham Forest (1-0) when he was substituted on for captain Darren Purse . After a poor defensive performance of the team in the game against Plymouth Argyle (1: 2), coach Dave Jones decided to make far-reaching changes, after which the previously targeted "core center-back pair" Darren Purse and Roger Johnson were up for grabs. As a result, Gyepes got his first appearance from the start at the expense of Purse in the 2-2 draw against FC Reading and Gyepes, who was married to the Hungarian figure skater Diana Poth in July 2008 , made it into the "Team of the Week" in the first week of December 2008 . After 21 games in the 2008/09 season, the club took him in April 2009 for three more years under contract.

Hungarian national team

Gyepes played his first international match for the Hungarian senior national team against the Czech Republic on February 12, 2002 , was a regular player with a total of 22 games until November 2005 and completed a total of nine competitive appearances in the European Championship and World Cup qualifications. After his serious knee injury with the "Wolves", he was no longer considered in the national team. In March 2009, the new coach Erwin Koeman nominated him again on the occasion of the stable performance of Gyepes in Cardiff for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Malta . On August 12, 2009 he was against Romania (0-1) for the first time for Hungary on the field again.
