David Robert "Dave" Jones (born August 17, 1956 in Liverpool ) is a former English football player and current coach.

Career as a player

Dave Jones started his playing career at Everton in his hometown of Liverpool . Between 1975 and 1979 he played 86 league games for his team and scored his only goal in the 1976/77 season. In 1979 he moved to Coventry City for £ 275,000 , but remained there due to an injury without major stakes. After an interim period in Hong Kong , where he was active for Seiko SA , he returned to England in 1981 and played for Preston North End for the next two years .

Career as a coach

Stockport County

After several years as an assistant or youth coach, Dave Jones took over the coaching position at Stockport County in 1995 . In the 1996/97 season he led his club as second in the table behind FC Bury in the second division. Through this successful activity at his first coaching station, the higher-class playing Southampton FC became aware of him and signed him for the coming season.

Southampton FC

In the Premier League 1997/98 he finished twelfth at the end of the season and thus a placement in the middle of the table. The following season in the Premier League 1998/99 the team spent a long time in relegation difficulties, but in the end reached 17th place and thus relegation. During the 1999/2000 season, Dave Jones was dismissed from his club in January 2000 because he had to answer to court and his work as a manager threatened to suffer.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

In January 2001 Jones signed his next contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers , who were active in the second division at the time. After a narrowly missed promotion in the 2001/02 season, promotion to the Premier League succeeded in 2002/03 with a 3-0 win in the play-off final over Sheffield United . However, the stay in the Premier League 2003/04 was short-lived, it was followed by the direct relegation and in the 2004/05 season even threatened the direct march through to the third division. Dave Jones was released in late 2004 and replaced by Glenn Hoddle .

Cardiff City

In 2005, Dave Jones took over his fourth coaching position with the Welsh club Cardiff City . His new club was active in the second English division. In the following years Jones was able to continuously strengthen his team and celebrated the climax in May 2008 by moving into the final of the FA Cup 2007/08 . This lost his team, however, 0-1 against Portsmouth FC . In the Football League Championship 2009/10 Cardiff reached the play-off final after finishing fourth at the end of the season. However, Cardiff lost another game in the final, this time 3-2 to Blackpool FC .

Also in the Football League Championship 2010/11 Cardiff City impressed with consistently good performances and reached the play-off semi-finals. There the team failed at Reading FC and thus missed promotion to the Premier League for the third time in a row . On May 30, 2011, the club announced the separation from Dave Jones.

Sheffield Wednesday

On March 2, 2012, Jones was introduced as the new coach of third division Sheffield Wednesday . With this he celebrated promotion to the Football League Championship in Football League One 2011/12 as second in the table . The following year the class was held successfully. After an unsuccessful first half of the 2013/14 season , Jones was released on December 1, 2013.

Hartlepool United

In January 2017, Jones was signed by fourth division Hartlepool United to replace Craig Hignett and brought in Kevin Cooper and Alex Armstrong as his assistants. Hartlepool already parted ways with the entire coaching staff in April 2017 after only 13 points were scored from 17 games.
