Edward John Frank "Eddie" Howe (born November 29, 1977 in Amersham ) is a former English football player and long-time coach of the AFC Bournemouth .

Player career

Eddie Howe began his playing career at the English third division AFC Bournemouth . With his team he spent the next few years in the Football League Second Division before relegation to the fourth division in the 2001/02 season. Howe then moved to the second division club Portsmouth . In the team trained by Harry Redknapp , a serious knee injury resulted in a month-long injury break. After interim loans to Swindon Town and his ex-club AFC Bournemouth, Eddie Howe returned to Bournemouth in November 2004 on a permanent contract basis . In the summer of 2007 he ended his playing career prematurely due to persistent knee problems.

Coaching career

Bournemouth AFC (2009-2011)

On January 1, 2009 Howe took over the interim coaching post in Bournemouth after Jimmy Quinn had been fired. On January 19, 2009, the fourth division announced the commitment of Howe until the end of the season. After relegation in Football League Two in 2008/09, the 31-year-old coach led his club to runner-up behind Notts County in 2009/10 and thus achieved promotion to the third division.

Burnley FC (2011-2012)

On January 16, 2011, the second division Burnley FC announced the commitment of Eddie Howe. At this time, Howe was with the promoted from Bournemouth in fourth place in Football League One 2010/11 . With the Premier League relegated from Burnley , he finished the Football League Championship 2010/11 in eighth place in the table. After he ended the subsequent season with Burnley only in thirteenth place in the table and the start of the 2012/13 season was not better, Howe decided on October 12, 2012 for family reasons to return to AFC Bournemouth.

Bournemouth AFC (2012-2020)

The club, which was on a relegation zone when he took office, reached the play-off ranks thanks to seventeen games without defeat and ultimately rose to the second division as runner-up in Football League One 2012/13 . In the Football League Championship 2013/14 he led the promoted team to a good tenth place in the table.

In the 2014/15 season he was promoted to the Premier League for the first time in club history with Bournemouth . On the last day of the match, Watford FC was pushed into second place and the championship was secured. For this achievement he was named Coach of the Year by the League Managers Association , the first coach outside the Premier League since 2006. The award was presented to him by then Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers .

Eddie Howe received another honor during the season: he was elected Manager of the Decade by the Football League , although he had only worked as a manager for 6 out of the 10 years. Howe has been widely praised for his success and his attractive style of play, including by his predecessor as manager of the AFC Bournemouth , Harry Redknapp . After the club missed relegation at the end of the 2019/20 season, Howe and Bournemouth parted ways in early August 2020 "by mutual agreement".
