Kevin Lee Cooper (born February 8, 1975 in Derby ) is a former English football player and current coach . He was a professional himself before, where he mostly acted as the left winger . He was mostly active in the English second division.

Athletic career

Cooper was promoted to the professional division of his home club Derby County after successful youth training , but remained there with only five competitive appearances below expectations. The meanwhile 22-year-old midfielder only found his preliminary sporting luck in the spring of 1997 at the third division Stockport County , where he was on loan almost two years after his league debut for Derby on May 7, 1995 against Watford FC (1: 2) until the end of the 1996/97 season played twelve championship games - he scored the winning goal on his debut to win 1-0 against Crewe Alexandra , later scored two more goals and rose with the club in the end to the second highest division in England. In the summer, the clubs agreed on a permanent transfer and for 150,000 pounds Cooper finally moved to Edgeley Park .

The winger, who made a name for himself with his strengths in flanking and dribbling , spent almost four years at "County" in the second-rate First Division and until March 2001 played a further 173 competitive games. 15 months before the end of the contract, he then moved to Wimbledon FC for 800,000 pounds , which, unlike the "basement child" Stockport County, had ambitions for the Premier League . The stay with the "Dons" lasted only a year and after ten goals in the course of the 2001/02 season - the best yield in his career - he joined his ex-trainer from Stockport Dave Jones again in March 2002 for a million pounds who was now responsible for second division rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers . He had recently turned down an offer from competitor West Bromwich Albion .

Cooper represented the injured Irishman Mark Kennedy for the Wolves in the remaining games of the 2001/02 season . He could not prevent the club from slipping from a direct promotion position into the play-off zone and failing there in the playoffs at Norwich City , where he had scored a spectacular long-range goal in the second leg to make it 1-0 However, given the previous 3-1 defeat, it was not enough. A year later, the club caught up with the Premier League promotion, although Cooper was no longer a regular player despite regular appearances during this time. In the English elite class Cooper completed at the beginning of the 2003/04 season in the 0: 4 home defeat against Charlton Athletic only one use as a substitute and only in the new year 2004 he collected match practice again at the second division loan clubs AFC Sunderland and Norwich City. In Norwich he acted ten times for the "Canaries" at the side of his former Wolves teammate Marc Edworthy and won the second division championship in the end. In the summer of 2003, Cooper returned to the newly relegated club from Wolverhampton and found himself again more often in the team there. Nevertheless, he asked in May 2005 for a transfer clearance and a month later hired a third time at a club coached by Dave Jones - Cardiff City , Welsh , which was represented like Wolverhampton in the second-rate Football League Championship .

Right away, Cooper was a regular at the Welsh capital club and played a total of 38 compulsory games in the 2005/06 season. However, he could not maintain this status and in the subsequent round of 2006/07 his new club loaned him to the third division Yeovil Town and in February 2007 to Football League Two to FC Walsall . Then Cooper found himself on the transfer list and after a club change did not materialize, he was downgraded to the reserve squad of the "Bluebirds". Only in October 2007 he helped out again with the Tranmere Rovers in a professional team, where he represented the long-term injured Steve Davies for a month . On February 1, 2008 Cardiff City and Cooper terminated their mutual contract and just a week later the now 33-year-old found a new employer in fourth division Chesterfield FC until the end of the 2007/08 season. The contract was not extended in summer 2008; instead it went to Newport County in Conference South , one of two English divisions of the sixth level. He stayed there until October 2009.

In January 2010, Cooper was hired by the Neath AFC in the top Welsh division.

Coaching career

After his active career, Cooper became a coach at Bedfont Town, then he coached the U-21s of Cardiff City . On May 20, 2014 it was announced that he would be coach and sports director of the first team of the traditional Swiss club Servette FC Genève , where Julian Jenkins, an acquaintance from Cardiff times, had just taken over the helm as CEO. At the beginning of November 2015 he switched to FC Wil as the successor to Fuat Çapa , but the club and coach parted ways at the end of the season.

In January 2017, Cooper was signed by fourth division Hartlepool United as assistant coach to Dave Jones , who succeeded Craig Hignett . In April 2017, Hartlepool parted from the entire coaching staff.
