The Football League Second Division 1973/74 was the 71st season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 25, 1973 and ended on May 3, 1974.

Second division champions were Middlesbrough FC and the second and third placed Luton Town and Carlisle United also rose to the Football League First Division . In the following second division season 1974/75, the three first division clubs FC Southampton , Manchester United and Norwich City, ranked in the table below, took the places for the three promoted teams . Crystal Palace , Preston North End and Swindon Town had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winner Oldham Athletic and the Bristol Rovers and York City behind them took the free positions in the following season 1974/75 .
