The Football League Third Division 1972/73 was the 46th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champions were the Bolton Wanderers and also the second-placed Notts County rose to the Football League Second Division . For the two promoted teams in the following third division season 1973/74, the two second division clubs Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion, ranked in the table below, took the places. Rotherham United , Brentford FC , Swansea City and Scunthorpe United had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions FC Southport and behind them Hereford United , Cambridge United and FC Aldershot took the vacant positions in the following season 1973/74 .
