The Football League Third Division 1983/84 was the 57th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Oxford United became third division champions, and Wimbledon FC and Sheffield United, ranked behind them, also rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1984/85, the second division clubs Derby County , Swansea City and Cambridge United ranked in the table below took the places. Scunthorpe United , Southend United , Port Vale and Exeter City had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions York City and the Doncaster Rovers , Reading FC and Bristol City, placed behind them , took the vacant positions in the following season 1984/85 .
