BBC Nyon (complete: Basketball Club de Nyon) is a Swiss basketball club from Nyon .

history

The club that exists today was founded in 1991 after the bankruptcy of its predecessor, Nyon Basket , which, however, was also called BBC Nyon for a long time.

Predecessor club Nyon Basket

Nyon Basket was founded in 1937 and has provided a basketball team for men ever since. In 1950, a team for women was set up, which is still active as Nyon Basket Feminin and has been Swiss champion three times.

The men's team's most successful decade was in the 1980s, when the club was already operating under the name BBC Nyon. Already in 1980 they played in the Korać Cup , the third most important European basketball cup at the time . However, the group stage was missed. In 1981 the team won the Swiss Cup . In a close final they finally prevailed against Vevey Basket with 96:95 . In the following year, Nyon was consequently qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup, where it just failed in the round of 16 to Sutton & Crystal Palace BC . In 1983, the team achieved the greatest success in the club's history when they won the Swiss championship . By winning the title, they qualified for the European Cup , where the team was eliminated in the second round at last year's winner of this competition Pallacanestro Cantù .

Nyon continued to play in the top league afterwards, but was unable to build on the great successes of the past. At the European level, the club took part in the Korać Cup three times, but always failed in qualifying for the main round. In the spring of 1991, the club finally had to file for bankruptcy, which led to the cessation of game operations and later to the dissolution of the club.

successes

New establishment of the BBC Nyon

On April 29, 1991, a short time after the dissolution, the BBC Nyon was re-established and started playing again from the 1991/92 season. The new start was started in the fourth division and in the 1999/2000 season, after almost a decade, led to a return to the top division, the national basketball league LNA.

The establishment in the first division happened quickly, the best placement was achieved in 2005 with 4th place. In the same year Nyon reached the final of the Swiss Basketball Cup , but lost against Basket-Club Boncourt with 61: 101. In 2009 the final of the rather insignificant league cup was reached, which was also lost against Friborg Olympic .

successes

  • 1 × Swiss Cup finalist (2005)
  • 1 × Swiss league cup finalist (2009)

Nyon Basket Feminine

The women's team was founded in 1950 and won the Swiss women's basketball championship, the Ligue Nationales Feminine, three times in 1973, 1979 and 1984. In 1979 and 1984, the Swiss Women's Cup was also won, which means that the team celebrated the double twice . Since then, these successes have not been repeated. The team currently plays in the second highest division LNB Pro B.
