The Football League Second Division 1983/84 was the 81st season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 27, 1983 and ended on May 12, 1984.

Second division champions were Chelsea and the second and third placed Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United also rose to the Football League First Division . The three first division clubs Birmingham City , Notts County and Wolverhampton Wanderers, ranked in the table below, took the places for the three promoted teams in the following second division season 1984/85 . Derby County , Swansea City and Cambridge United had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Oxford United and Wimbledon and Sheffield United, who ranked behind them, took the vacant positions in the following season 1984/85 .
