The Football League Second Division 1961/62 was the 59th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 19, 1961 and ended on May 4, 1962.
Liverpool FC became second division champions and the second-placed Leyton Orient also rose to the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1962/63, the two first division clubs Cardiff City and Chelsea FC, ranked in the table below, took their places. The Bristol Rovers and Brighton & Hove Albion had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the two clubs, the third division winners Portsmouth FC and third division champions Grimsby Town took the free positions in the following season 1962/63 .
