The Football League Second Division 1990/91 was the 88th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 25, 1990 and ended on May 11, 1991.

Second division champions were Oldham Athletic and the second and third placed West Ham United and Sheffield Wednesday rose in the Football League First Division, which was expanded from 20 to 22 . In addition, Notts County prevailed in the play-off games against Middlesbrough FC and in the final against Brighton & Hove Albion , becoming the fourth promoted team. From the First Division, the two first division clubs AFC Sunderland and Derby County, which are ranked in the table below, took free places in the following second division season 1991/92 . West Bromwich Albion and Hull City had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . In the following season 1991/92 there were four teams from the third division with third division winners Cambridge United , runners-up Southend United , third Grimsby Town and play-off winner Tranmere Rovers .
