The Football League Third Division 1973/74 was the 47th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champions were Oldham Athletic and in addition, the Bristol Rovers and York City , who ranked behind, rose to the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1974/75, the second division teams Crystal Palace , Preston North End and Swindon Town ranked in the table below . From the Third Division in the Football League Fourth Division dismount had to Cambridge United , Shrewsbury Town , the FC Southport and AFC Rochdale . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Peterborough United and the FC Gillingham , Colchester United and FC Bury, placed behind them , took the vacant positions in the following season 1974/75 .
