Sanaroa is a volcanic island in the Solomon Sea . It is located in the center of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands , which belong to the Esa'Ala district of the Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea . Sanaroa is part of the Dobu Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area of the Esa'Ala district. Fergusson Island is just 5 kilometers to the west .

The island reaches a height of 212 meters in the north.

At the 2000 census, the island had 692 inhabitants in two villages. The main town of the same name (also Etana ) with 418 inhabitants is in the south, and Siawawa with 274 inhabitants is on the east coast. The third village named Udaudana on the west coast was uninhabited. Around the place of Udaudana on the topographic map from 1962 the place Gurawaia is recorded, as the only place on the island.

In a voting district survey from 2012, other villages are mentioned, namely Maiaru, Laua and Tewala. In the case of Tewala (also called Tewara), however, it is a separate island 11 km north of Sanaroa, which only belongs to Sanaroa as an electoral district.
