The Hmeimim military airfield ( Russian Аэродром Хмеймим Aerodrom Chmeimim , Arabic قاعدة حميميم الجوية, DMG Qāʿidat Ḥumaimīm al-ǧauwiyya ) is a base of the Russian Air Force in Syria. It is located in the northern area of the Basil al-Assad International Airport of Latakia in the west of the country. It was put into operation on September 30, 2015. It is only accessible to Russian military personnel. It is the only official military base of the Russian Air Force outside of Russian territory.

In September 2015, 28 Su-24M , Su-25SM , Su-30SM and Su-34 aircraft of the air force were stationed at the air force base for the Russian military operation in Syria . For close defense were battle tank T-90 , armored personnel carrier BTR-82 , artillery and Mi-24 - combat helicopter stationed. By 2017, other types such as the Mil Mi-28 , Tu-214R and the Beriev A-50 could be made out on the base.

The facility is secured by the Russian S-400 air defense system . With its range of 400 kilometers, it can potentially combat air traffic across the Middle East.

In June 2019, sensors on the International Space Station determined that Federation troops had installed a jammer on the premises of the Hmeimim military airfield , which uses GPS spoofing to interfere with data from the NAVSTAR GPS operated by the US Department of Defense . In the weeks before the discovery of GPS navigation systems in the vicinity of Larnaka Airport in Cyprus and Ben Gurion near Tel Aviv, pilots had reported that this was attributed to the Russian jammer as a result of the reconnaissance.

Incidents

  • The facility has been the target of attacks several times, with two Russian soldiers falling on December 31, 2017.
  • On March 6, 2018, an Antonov An-26 transport aircraft of the Russian Air Force (registration number RF-92955 ) crashed while approaching the Hmeimim military airfield at around 3 p.m. Moscow time about 500 m from the runway. All Russian military personnel on board, 33 passengers and six crew members, were killed. According to a report, the aircraft should not have been shot at.
  • At the beginning of May a Su-30 crashed into the sea without being shot after taking off from the Hmeimim military airfield, killing both pilots.
