The crash of an Antonov An-26 in Latakia on March 6, 2018 is one of the most serious crashes of this aircraft type. An Antonov An-26 had an accident on a flight from the Syrian military airfield in Kuweyres to the Hmeimim air base in Latakia .

On March 6, 2018, the An-26 was to transport Russian military personnel stationed in Syria from the Kuweyres military airfield near Aleppo to the Hmeimim air base in Latakia. The machine crashed while approaching the Syrian military airfield at Hmeimim at 2:51 p.m. Moscow time, about 500 meters from the runway. All people on board, 33 passengers and six crew members, were killed. The Islamist opposition group Jaish al-Islam claimed to have shot down the plane. The fighters stated that they had fired several heavy machine guns at the Antonov as it approached at low altitude. A Russian accident investigation contradicted this representation. No traces could be found that would prove the use of firearms. Wind shear close to the ground , which caused the aircraft to hit during the landing phase, was identified as the official cause of the accident .
