Güven Bakır

Güven Bakır (* 1939 in Izmir ; † May 2018 ibid) was a Turkish classical archaeologist .

Güven Bakır has worked in the Izmir Archeology and Museums Directorate since 1959. He studied at Ege Üniversitesi in Izmir, where he graduated in 1964. He and his wife Tomris Bakır completed a doctoral degree at the Archaeological Institute of Heidelberg University . In 1972, a year before his wife, he joined Roland Hampe with the work Sophilos . A PhD contribution to his style . After returning to Turkey in 1979 he became an assistant professor at Ege Üniversitesi. Since 1981 he has led the excavations of the ancient Greek city of Klazomenai . At the university he rose to head of the institute and deputy head of his faculty. Until his retirement in 2000 he worked for 21 years at the university and 19 years as excavation manager in Klazomenai.

Bakır was an internationally respected researcher. He was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . The funeral ceremony in the presence of the mayoress of Urla , Sibel Uyar, as part of his funeral was partly carried out in a 600-year-old olive grove on the site of the Klazomenai archaeological site.

In addition to his excavation in Klazomenai, Bakır did research in particular on early black-figure vase painting , including Sophilos, for example, on the painter of Istanbul 7314 or the painter of Berlin 1659 . One of his academic students was Yaşar Ersoy , who was one of his successors as head of excavations in Klazomenai.
