Jürg Morgenthaler

Jürg Morgenthaler (born December 13, 1953 in Bern ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( alto saxophone , clarinet ) and band leader.

Morgenthaler gained his first experience in traditional jazz bands at the age of 14. Among other things, he was initially active in the bands of Alex Welsh , Bob Wallis and the Tremble Kids and the Hot Mallets . He received his first awards at the jazz festivals in Zug and Lucerne. He completed a classical instrumental course at the Zurich Conservatory with a diploma and a degree at the Swiss Jazz School Bern.

In 1983 he founded his own quartet JMRhythm Four , which played both swing and modern jazz . In the next few years there were concerts and recordings with guest soloists such as Benny Bailey , Sandy Patton , James Zollar , Peter Appleyard and Abdullah Ibrahim . He also played lead in the Alto Jazz Heritage Big Band of Vince Benedetti and Zurich Jazz Orchestra and the Maria Schneider Workshop Lucerne. He was also a member of Joe Haider's International Big Band , Mani Planzer's experimental big band and Pepe Lienhard's The Swing Must Go On .

Morgenthaler composed for the sextet Swiss Jazz Summit , of which he is the leader. He can also be heard on albums by the Roy King Dixieland Band, The Smoking Band , the Swiss Dixieland All Stars and by Bonnie Taylor , Mike Goetz / Dan Barrett . Together with his brother Robert Morgenthaler , he produced experimental projects; he was also involved in Lindsay L. Cooper's Four Seasons . He received several awards as best clarinetist in the Swiss jazz journal Jazz n'more .
