Peter Frei (musician)

Peter Frei (* 13. July 1943 in Zurich ) is a Swiss double bassist of the Modern Jazz .

Live and act

After a predominantly autodidactic bass studies, Frei was a member of The Gamblers around Adolf Buddha Scheidegger between 1963 and 1970 and also soon worked in other groups on the traditional scene ( Harlem Ramblers , New Harlem Ramblers , Swinghouse Sextet and Storyville Hot Six ). Through the scene around the Zurich jazz club Africana he came into contact with modern jazz and also became a member of the Melch Däniker trio and Mani Planzer's big band . He also went on tour with Charly Antolini ; from 1968 projects and bands with Irène Schweizer , Franco Ambrosetti , Hans Kennel and Pierre Favre were added.

Between 1970 and 1985 Frei formed the “Jazz-Live-Trio” of the Swiss radio with Klaus Koenig and Peter Schmidlin : For the then Radio Beromünster there were over 100 live broadcasts and concerts with stars like Lucky Thompson , Slide Hampton , Lee Konitz , Dexter Gordon , Johnny Griffin , Zbigniew Seifert , Karin Krog or Albert Mangelsdorff , some of which have since been released on CD. Since 1973 he has also been a member of the internationally successful electro jazz band MAGOG (with Klaus Koenig, Andy Scherrer , Peter Schmidlin, Paul Haag , Hans Kennel ). Furthermore, there was close collaboration with Horace Parlan , Hugo Heredia , Vince Benedetti , Billy Brooks , Art Lande , Bob Degen and Makaya Ntshoko . In 1980 he was one of the co-founders and until 1987 teacher at the St.Gallen Jazz School. From 1983 to 2005 he also taught at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern. Since 1990 he has led his own quartet, but has also recorded with bands such as the Jazz Art Sextet around Umberto Arlati , as well as the groups of Peggy Chew, Marc Hemmeler and Jean-Paul Brodbeck .

Prizes and awards

Frei won the “best bassist” award at the Zurich Jazz Festival in both 1967 and 1968 .
