Robert Morgenthaler

Robert Morgenthaler (born January 12, 1952 in Bern ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( trombone , also alphorn , didgeridoo , shell horn ).

Live and act

Morgenthaler already worked at festivals as a teenager. Then he studied at the Conservatory in Zurich and at the Swiss Jazz School trombone. In 1972 he was a member of Roy Pellett's band . From 1974 he worked as a freelance musician. In 1976 he became a member of the Swiss Jazz Quintet , with which he recorded several albums until the mid-1980s and toured North America. In 1985 and 1986 he played in the bands of Carla Bley . He then worked with Joe Haider , both in the sextet and in the Joe Haider - Mel Lewis Orchestra ( Keep Hot , Jeton 1987). As a band leader, he led his own quartet, which included guitarist Günter Weiss, bassist Hämi Hämmerli and drummer Marc Huber. In the 1990s he continued to work with Robin Eubanks , Franco Ambrosetti , Makaya Ntshoko , Lee Konitz , Moondog , Michel Godard and Lars Lindvall . Afterwards Morgenthaler was mainly on the road with ethno-jazz programs of his trio Roots of Communication , which was then expanded to include Erika Stucky and performed not only in Europe, but also in Africa and Asia. He also played alphorn jazz with Günter Baby Sommer & Swiss Horns and straight ahead jazz with his brother Jürg Morgenthaler for the Morgenthaler Brothers . In the Windbone project he worked with trombonist Jean-Jacques Pedretti; he also belongs to Stucky's Bubble Family and plays in a duo with Marcel Bernasconi . He also appeared in Peter Kowald's Global Village with the ensemble of Pina Bausch as well as with Pierre Favre and with the Echo vom Zürihorn (with Priska Walss and Nick Gutersohn).

Morgenthaler has been a lecturer at the Bern University of the Arts and at the Lucerne School of Music since 1979 .

Prizes and awards

Morgenthaler has been repeatedly voted "Trombonist of the Year" by Jazz n 'More magazine since 1997 .
