Priska Walss

Priska Walss (born October 20, 1964 in Zurich ) is a Swiss trombonist and alphorn player in the fields of both classical and contemporary jazz .

Priska Walss studied at the Zurich Conservatory and received her teaching diploma for trombone and large brass in 1991; afterwards she played in various classical formations, such as the brass quartets Brasserie and Trombaci and is a member of the Chamber Philharmonic of Graubünden . In addition, she improvised as a trombonist and alphorn player solo or in permanent ensembles such as the duo frappant together with Gabriela Friedli , Echo vom Zürichhorn with Nick Gutersohn and Robert Morgenthaler and Zigerhörnli with Nick Gutersohn and Reto Senn. She also appeared in 1998 with Urs Voerkel , Gabriela Scherrer and Jacques Widmer (CD Propinquity, Zwischenzeitstück, Aria ). In the group Quatre têtes she improvised with Susann Wehrli, Claudia Ulla Binder and Gabriela Friedli. As part of her diverse engagements, Priska Walss has been instrumental in the discovery and establishment of the alphorn for experimental music over the past two decades.

Between 2000 and 2002 the recordings for the album Intervista were made , which she recorded in a duo with Gabriela Friedli for the Intakt label . The authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton consider the album to be one of the most refreshing new releases on the European jazz scene in recent years.

Walss also worked with Urs Voerkel .
