Between the lines

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

between the lines is a German record label for jazz and new improvisation music that was founded in 1999.

The foundation of the label was preceded by a concert that Paul Steinhardt from Frankfurt - head of DSF (Deutsche Structured Finance) - organized with Franz Koglmann . Steinhardt contacted the artist after no more albums were released for a while and suggested that he perform at the end of a financial convention in Frankfurt's Südbahnhof. Franz Koglmann then performed on November 26, 1998 under the motto “Between the Lines - Between Jazz and European Modernism”.

After the concert the idea arose to found a label together; DSF was to finance it and Franz Koglmann was to become the artistic director. There are now a number of albums that range between jazz, world music and new music, including concert duets by jazz musicians such as Enrico Rava with Ran Blake , Tony Coe with Roger Kellaway . Recordings by veterans of the black American jazz avant-garde, such as Andrew Cyrille , Bill Dixon , Alan Silva and Wadada Leo Smith , were also released, alongside minimalist-inspired ensemble music from Switzerland.

Steinhardt and Koglmann formulated their claim similar to Gunther Schuller's ideas for the Third Stream : "They see their label as a platform for musicians who claim to create something new and third by integrating different musical traditions". A musician like Ran Blake formed the bridge to the old-school third stream: the pianist, formerly Schuller's student and an important third-stream theorist as early as the late 1950s.

In 2004, between the lines and Koglmann, who resigned as artistic director , parted ways . The artistic director is now Volker Dueck . between the lines published music by Oskar Aichinger , Ralph Alessi , Christy Doran , Kermit Driscoll , Trevor Dunn , James Emery , Drew Gress , Gerry Hemingway , Peter Herbert , Tristan Honsinger , François Houle ( Cryptology , 2000), the Klangforum Wien , Art Lande , Peggy Lee , John Lindberg , Carl Maguire , Michael Moore , Simon Nabatov , Kevin Norton , Giorgio Occhipinti , Louis Sclavis , Gebhard Ullmann , Wolter Wierbos , Andreas Willers , Nils Wogram and Yitzhak Yedid . Interpretations by ensembles such as Ensemble Plus and Ensemble xx century have also been edited.
