reception

Glenn Astarita wrote in All About Jazz , “François Houle and his working band are exploring the mechanics of cryptology as the thematic basis for this very interesting publication. With this production, the band appears to be embarking on an exploratory journey that perhaps correlates with complex mathematical algorithms of music notation, while laying a foundation in the mind of hearing through the power of suggestion. On pieces like Palinodia I and Asymptote , the Francois Houle 5 deal with untamed soundscapes, whereas the cellist Peggy Lee either manages the heartbeat or participates in dialogue-oriented interplay with Houle and the trumpeter / pianist Brad Turner . Percussionist Dylan van der Schyff , who contributes to the meter, plays an equally important role as a colorist. "

Steve Loewy gave the album three (out of 5) stars in Allmusic and said, “Those who are familiar with Houle's European outlook and sophisticated sounds, preferred by the Between the Lines label, will hardly be surprised by the unique mix of densely abstract Harmonies that permeate many of these pieces. ”In the author's view, these compositions“ require focused listening; they are complex, with diverse directions. In contrast to the usual instrumentation of smaller enselmbles, a sibylline quality prevails here. ”Loewy responds to the compositional process described by Houle in the Liner Notes, which is based on complex teachings, but which, as a listener, can safely be neglected. Specifically, there are solemn escapades that unite the pieces. Percussionist Dylan Van Der Schyff in particular and cellist Peggy Lee shoot magnificent short paroxysms from broken riffs, while Houle remains rather melodic. From time to time everything explodes in a familiar way.
