Giorgio Occhipinti (born June 12, 1969 in Ragusa ) is an Italian pianist , band leader and composer of jazz and contemporary music .

Live and act

Occhipinti learned to play the piano as a child, as well as drums and flute, which he played in a band. He also accompanied his father, a trumpeter. In October 1989 he performed at the Paris Jazz Festival as part of the “International competition for piano jazz”, which was dedicated to Martial Solal . Then he worked with actress Lidya Alfonsi and composed the music for her recitals. In 1989 he became a member of one of the then leading Sicilian jazz formations, the December Thirty Jazz Trio , with bassist Giuseppe Guarrella and drummer Francesco Branciamore . From 1992 he played in the Pino Minafra Sud Ensemble and also worked on its albums Sudori (1995) and Canto Libero (2000). In 1993 he founded the Ibleo del Jazz festival with Giuseppe Guarrella, of which he is still the artistic director. In the same year he formed the Giorgio Occhipinti Hereo Nonetto . In 1994 he played in the formation Triple Project with saxophonists Eugenio Colombo and Giuseppe Guarrella. In 1995 he formed the European Duo with Joëlle Léandre and recorded the album Incandescences in 1997 . In May 1998 he founded the formation Duetsequences with Olivia Bignardi . In March 2000 he was a member of the Banlieues Bleues Quartet , which was founded at the Paris Jazz Festival Banlieues Bleues with Pino Minafra, Sandro Satta and Vincenzo Mazzone . In March 2000 he founded the Girgio Occhipinti Hereo Tentetto , whose CD Global Music & Circular Thought was voted the best publication of 2001 by the English magazine Jazz Reviews . In September 1999 he founded the Faust Group with Miriam Palma , Maurizio Maiorana , Domenico Sciajno and Giuseppe Guarrella . In 2001 he was a member of the Concerto Dantesco formation .

In addition to his work as a band leader and pianist, Occhipinti is also active as a composer and interpreter of contemporary music. Based on the principle of “organized chaos” and building on Igor Stravinsky , Nino Rota and other composers of the 20th century, he wrote numerous pieces of music for orchestras and chamber ensembles (“I Muri a secco”). He composed pieces for cello duets and for string quartet (1999/2000) as well as for a string sextet, which was performed at the Noci Europa Jazz Festival , "Dodici Mottetti". His compositions appeared on the double album of the same name. In October 2001 he founded the formation Global Music Nonetto in Vienna (in collaboration with the record label Between the Lines and the Festival Music on Music of the Wiener Musik Galerie ) and wrote the suite “Revolution” for them. In June 2002 he formed the group Less of Five with Olivia Bignardi, Giuseppe Guarrella, Antonio Moncada.

Occhipinti has worked with many jazz musicians over the course of his career, such as Lee Konitz , Barre Phillips , Michel Godard , Gianluigi Trovesi , Evan Parker , Peter Brötzmann , Arkady Schilkloper , Ernst Reijseger , Paul Rutherford and others.
