Gianni Gebbia

Gianni Gebbia (born March 1, 1961 in Palermo ) is an Italian soprano, alto and tenor saxophonist and clarinetist of modern creative jazz and new improvisational music.

Live and act

Gebbia is self-taught and began his musical career in countless Sicilian orchestras and at jam sessions with guest US musicians. In the 1970s and early 1980s he began his first experiments in improvised music; In 1980 he stayed in New York for a year and worked with musicians from the loft scene . In the late 1980s he recorded his first albums under his own name for the Soundevent and Spasc (h) labels ; In 1990 he took part in the Berlin Total Music Meeting and played a. a. with musicians like Steve Lacy and Lindsay Cooper . From 1989 to 1992 he worked with his formation Gianni Gebbia Group and the Gianni Gebbia Trio , to which Lelio Giannetto and Vittorio Villa belonged. He also cooperated with Pino Minafra , Ernst Reijseger and Massimo Simonini . In 1991 he worked with the drummer Günter "Baby" Sommer and the bassist Peter Kowald , with whom he recorded the album Cappuccini Klang in 1992 for Spasc (h) . In 1996/97 he performed in Japan, the United States and Canada. In 2001 the album Pronto by the trio of Xavier Garcia , Gianni Gebbia and Nils Wogram was created for Intakt Records . In 2003 he worked with his Trionacria with bassist Vincenzo Vasi and drummer Francesco Cusa , in 2008 with Yuko Oshima and Marcos Fernandes .

Gebbia has also worked with numerous dance theater groups (including Masaki Iwana , Tadashi Endo , Antonio Carallo , Julie Stanzak , Yves Musard ), poets ( Alberto Masala ), video artists ( Salvo Cuccia ), film and theater directors such as Raúl Ruiz , Roberto Andò and Jérôme Savary .

In the course of his career Gebbia has worked with numerous musicians from the international jazz and avant-garde music scene , such as Benoît Delbecq , Xavier Garcia , Giorgio Occhipinti , Heiner Goebbels , David Moss , Yoshihide Otomo , Fred Frith , Anatoli Wapirow , Vladimir Tarassow , Jean-Marc Montera , Tiziano Popoli , Dominique Regef , Louis Sclavis , Jim O'Rourke , Glen Velez , Noël Akchoté , Antonello Salis , Sergei Kurjochin , Han Bennink and Elliott Sharp .

In 1997 and 1998 he was artistic director of the Palermo di Scena Festival and the Curva Minore Festival . Gianni Gebbia also worked as a writer for Italian and international music magazines such as Musica Jazz , Improjazz , Jazz Hot , Jazz Magazine , Jazz Podium and wrote for The New York Times and Il Manifesto . Gianni Gebbia has given seminars at Sonoma State College, California, and Mills College , Oakland .
