Dominique Regef (* 1947 in Paris ) is a French violinist who initially belonged to the folk scene , but was increasingly active in the field of new improvisational music and jazz . He plays numerous other string instruments and is considered one of the most innovative hurdy-gurdy players .

Live and act

Regef first learned violin and piano before expanding the spectrum to include other string instruments such as the cello , the rebec and fiddle , the Rajasthan dilruba and, above all, the hurdy-gurdy.

Regef initially worked with musicians from the folk scene such as Jean-François Dutertre and Emmanuelle Parrenin, with whom he also released several records, and was part of the groups Blanche Fleur , Malicorne ( Le Bestiaire ), and Mélusine ( La Treizième heure , 1979). He increasingly worked with musicians from the jazz and improvisation fields such as Michel Doneda , Lê Quan Ninh , Daunik Lazro , Beñat Achiary , Evan Parker , Joëlle Léandre , Pascal Contet , Carlos Zingaro , Otomo Yoshihide , Bob Ostertag , Jon Rose , Frances-Marie Uitti , Jean-Marc Montera , Philippe Maté , Rémy Walter , Jean-François Méchali , Michel Marre , Jacques Di Donato , Didier Petit , but also with Stephan Eicher , Freddy Eichelberger , Éric Lareine, Rosina de Pèira, Mighela Cesari, Equidad Bares and György Kurtag junior. In 1993 he released his debut album under his own name, which was highly praised by the critics for the sounds he developed on the instruments. In 2009 he recorded the suite Horizons chimeriques by Daniel Tosi. He has also performed with the Trio Memento and the Amor Fati Trio .
