Jean-Marc Montera is a French jazz and avant-garde guitarist.

Montera has been active as a soloist, band member and band leader since the 1970s. In 1978 he founded the Groupe de Reserche et d'Improvisations Musicales ( GRIM ), an association of musicians and music producers in Marseille . He was a member of André Jaume's groups . Since 1993 he has been a member of the FDTC quintet (with Edmond Hosdikian , Fred Giuliani , Jean Michel Bourroux and Makoto Yabuki ); He also played in the group Attila (with Jim Meneses and Gianni Gebbia ) and a duo with Dominique Regef. He has performed at concerts and festivals with musicians such as Jaume, Barre Phillips , Yves Robert , Henry Lowther , Paul Lovens , Fredy Studer , Hans Reichel , Keith Rowe , Chris Cutler , David Moss , Günter Müller , Loren Mazzacane Connors , Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo on. He leads a jazz quartet with Fred Galiay , Tony Buck and Jean-François Pauvros and a trio with Jean-François Pauvros and Noël Akchoté .

Montera performed his rock opera Helter Skelter with Fred Frith . The Berliner Ensemble , directed by Peter Palitzsch , performed his setting of Ödön von Horváth's play Glaube Liebe Hoffnung . Directed by Jean-Claude Berrutti , Das Mündel wants to be guardian was performed by Peter Handke and Der Fall by Biljana Srbljanovic in its setting. From 1999, in collaboration with the director Hubert Colas, performances of plays such as Die Trauung (by Witold Gombrowicz ), Nouvelle Vague and La Fin de l'amour (by Christine Angot ), Ces Objets aimés qui d habitude ne parlent pas (by Colas) and Cleaned (by Sarah Kane ).

He also composed and played the music for a number of short and documentary films and has been working with the dance company SKALEN since 1999 . With the dancers Michelle Ricozzi and Giovanna Vélardi and the sculptor Patrick Laffont , he realized a number of multimedia projects, such as Le plongeon du voimekoi and Walkabout Stalk at the DanseM Festival in Marseille and Envahi (r) and Parcours ascensionnels at the Torcy Festival. In 2002 he realized the piece J'ai mis du sables exprès, vite fait, comme ça dans mes chaussures with the choreographer Odile Duboc .

In 2001 Montera founded the Ensemble d'Improvisateurs Européens with Hans Koch , Thomas Lehn , Hélène Breschand , Dan Vandewalle , Lelio Giannetto and Chris Cutler . This is dedicated to the interpretation of works in graphical notation and led u. a. Cornelius Cardew's composition Treatise on.
