Mike Cooper

Mike Cooper (born September 20, 1942 in Reading , Berkshire ) is an English guitarist and singer.

Cooper founded the rhythm and blues group The Blues Committee in 1962 as a singer and harmonica player with guitarist Paul Manning , guitarist Dicky Reeves and drummer Eddie Page , with guests such as John Lee Hooker , Jimmy Reed , Howlin 'Wolf and Alexis Korners Blues Incorporated performed. He recorded his first record Out Of The Shades in 1966 with singer and guitarist Derek Hall . He then worked with representatives of the acoustic blues such as Jo Ann Kelly , Dave Kelly , Tony McPhee and Ian A. Anderson and recorded the album Oh Really in 1969 .

In the 1970s he opened up to jazz music and worked a. a. with Dudu Pukwana , Harry Miller , Louis Moholo and Mongezi Feza from South Africa, the composer Michael Gibbs and the saxophonist Mike Osborne . He founded the Machine Gun Company with Geoff Hawkins , Alan Cook , Les Calvert and Tim Richardson .

He then focused on more experimental improvisational music, working with Eddie Prévost , Keith Rowe , David Toop , Steve Beresford , Max Eastley , Paul Burwell , dancer Jo-Anna Pyne and Viv Corringham . With Lol Coxhill and Roger Turner he founded the improvisation trio The Recedents . Currently (2018) he is playing in the Tropical Gothic project with Clive Bell and Sylvia Hallet .

He also experimented with the first turntable musicians, played Rembetiko with Viv Corringham , Country Blues with the band National Gallery and founded the Uptown Hawaiian in 1987 with Cyril Lefebvre . In 1994 he undertook his first Pacific tour, during which he a. a. worked with New Zealander Richard Nunns , Australian Chris Abrahams , the Tu Fuego quartet (with Jeff Henderson , Tom Callwood , Anthony Donaldson ), filmmaker Louise Curham and action artist John Wolseley . Since the 1990s he has increasingly incorporated electronic music and digital sound processing into his music.
