Tony McPhee
Anthony Charles "Tony" McPhee (born March 22, 1944 in Redlands House near Humberston , Lincolnshire , England ) is a British blues guitarist and singer.
McPhee formed his first band while at school. Initially a skiffle enthusiast, he became a declared blues musician in the early 1960s under the influence of Cyril Davies and Blues Incorporated .
McPhee founded Boorman (drums) the band with John Cruickshank (vocals), Pete Cruickshank (bass) and Dave The Dollar Bills . With the additional member Bob Hall (piano) she finally called themselves The Groundhogs , after Ground Hog Blues by John Lee Hooker .
The Groundhogs built a reputation in the UK as a solid R&B and blues band. In the mid-sixties, the Groundhogs backing band were on the European tours of Hooker and Champion Jack Dupree . Due to the lack of success, the Groundhogs disbanded and Tony McPhee worked as a session musician, among others. a. for champion Jack Dupree.
In August 1966 McPhee formed the group Herbal Mixture with Pete Cruickshank (bass) and Mike Meekham (drums) , whose sound was similar to that of the Yardbirds . Her psychedelic rock , however, always showed McPhee's roots in the blues. They had success as a club band and even appeared as the opening act for the Jeff Beck Group , but they could not land a record hit. At the end of 1967 the group broke up.
McPhee kept playing the blues, u. a. in the John Dummer Blues Band . In 1968 McPhee initiated a reunion of the Groundhogs, which existed as a trio until 1976 and recorded several successful albums over the years. Then he appeared as a soloist, but also as Tony McPhee and the Groundhogs and released other albums. In 1995 he took part in the Alexis Korner Memorial Concert . He is also part of the cast of The British Blues All Stars .
