Blues Incorporated was a British blues band in the 1960s. It was the first European blues band to play electrically amplified. The influence of the band around frontman Alexis Korner is often underestimated, as they shaped the music of the 1960s and was a breeding ground for bands like the Rolling Stones , Animals , John Mayall's Bluesbreakers or Free .

Foundation and history

The band was founded in 1961 by Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies in London . The blues fans Korner and Davies had worked together before and opened their own music venue, the London Blues and Barrelhouse Club . Initially, the group played at the Ealing Rhythm & Blues Club , which was located in the basement of a tea shop, right next to the Ealing Broadway underground station in London . From May 1962 the band performed regularly in the Marquee Club - the first time in front of 127 guests. But just four months later - according to SPIEGEL - more than 1,000 visitors were counted on every Blues Thursday. The debut album by Blues Incorporated, recorded in June 1962 and released in November, bears the title R&B from the Marquee , but was recorded in the Decca studios in West Hampstead , London .

When Korner brought in the Hammond player and saxophonist Graham Bond , Davies left the band. Blues Incorporated initially had classic blues numbers by Muddy Waters , Jimmy Witherspoon , Leroy Carr , Ma Rainey or Willie Dixon in their repertoire in addition to their own compositions , but later also recorded pieces by Ray Charles , WC Handy , Charles Mingus and Herbie Hancock . Stylistically located somewhere between jazz , rock music and rhythm and blues , Blues Incorporated became a hotbed for musician careers in the field of rock and jazz music. The line-up changed frequently, especially in the early years; this was facilitated by the fact that the band concentrated on live performances and invited a wreath of musicians around the band to sessions . The last line-ups with the rhythm group Danny Thompson and Terry Cox, which later switched to the folk jazz group Pentangle , were quite consistent.

In 1967 Korner broke up the band, but appeared again under this name for the BBC in August 1968.

meaning

The bands that emerged from Blues Incorporated include the Animals , the Graham Bond Organization , Manfred Mann's group and above all the Rolling Stones . Korner's band contributed to both a blues revival in Europe and the formation of a blues- based British variant of rock music.
