Chris Pyne

Chris Pyne (born February 14, 1939 in Bridlington ( East Riding of Yorkshire ) as Norman Christopher Pyne , † April 12, 1995 in Wimbledon ) was a British jazz trombonist .

Pyne learned the piano as a child and was a self-taught trombonist . 1960-61 he served in the British Air Force, where he worked in the same band as Paul Rutherford , John Stevens and Trevor Watts . In 1963 he moved to London , where he first appeared with Fat John Cox and soon in the Blues Incorporated by Alexis Korner , with whom he also recorded. He played for Humphrey Lyttelton from 1966 to 1970 , and also worked for John Dankworth , Ronnie Scott , Tubby Hayes and Michael Gibbs . From 1970 he played in the sextet of John Taylor , with Kenny Wheeler , but also appeared with Maynard Ferguson and John Stevens and between 1970 and 1983 was a permanent member of Frank Sinatra's European accompaniment orchestra . In the early 1980s he toured with Gordon Beck . From 1984 to 1992 he was part of the John Surmans and John Warrens Brass Project . He also continued to play with Michael Gibbs.

Pyne, who played both slide trombone and valve trombone and was honored as a top trombonist by the Melody Maker in 1969 , also recorded with Barbara Thompson , Dizzy Gillespie , Ella Fitzgerald , Sarah Vaughan and Charlie Watts . As a studio musician, he can also be heard on albums by Curved Air , Bryan Ferry , Caravan and Nektar . His younger brother is the trumpeter and pianist Mick Pyne .
