Wolfgang Fuchs (saxophonist)

Wolfgang Fuchs (born February 21, 1949 in Landau in the Palatinate ; † on or before February 3, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German saxophonist and bass clarinet player who, coming from free jazz , primarily emerged in the field of improvised music .

Fuchs first played the mandolin and violin from the age of 9. From 1969 he studied clarinet and saxophone at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe before moving to Berlin in 1974. He has been working there as a freelance musician since 1976. He played in his own trio with Hans Schneider ("Momente", 1976) and in groups around Sven-Åke Johansson and Alexander von Schlippenbach , increasingly concentrating on the sopranino saxophone and the woofers in the clarinets. In the 1980s he appeared with Fred Van Hove and Peter Hollinger or Paul Lytton as a Berlin encounter , but also made the solo record So oder so (1985). In 1983 he founded with Radu Malfatti , Erhard Hirt , Phil Wachsmann , Paul Lytton and others, the King Übü Örchestrü as a European improvisation orchestra that still performs occasionally today. Since 1986 he has also played with Tony Oxley , since 1988 he has worked with the composer Georg Katzer , and in 1990 he was part of Cecil Taylor's workshop ensemble . In 1993 he founded the (double) bass clarinet trio Holz für Europa with Hans Koch and Peter van Bergen , after having previously worked in a quartet with Evan Parker , Louis Sclavis and Koch. In 1994 and 2004 he was involved in several conductions for Butch Morris . From 2002 he also performed with Xu Fengxia and percussionist Roger Turner . He also played in duos with Jean-Marc Montera and Fernando Grillo.

Between 2001 and 2008 he was one of the directors of the Total Music Meeting .
