Il manifesto (Italian The Manifesto ) is an Italian daily newspaper with a left-wing orientation. The circulation today is less than 20,000 copies.

A forerunner of the same name was founded in 1969 by a group of left communist functionaries around Luigi Pintor and Rossana Rossanda who were excluded from the party in the “hot autumn” of 1969 and initially appeared monthly. Since April 1971 il manifesto has been published as a daily newspaper in Rome. The Communist Party then followed a line later called Eurocommunism , in which it distanced itself from the idea of a revolutionary overthrow and sought the transition to socialism on the path of parliamentary democracy and distanced itself from the demands of the 1968 movement .

Despite critical contributions to the Communist Party of Italy (PCI) , the newspaper was read by many of the party's voters who found the party's newspaper L'Unità too moderate. After the dissolution of the PCI in 1991, il manifesto came closer to the Rifondazione Comunista politically , but without giving up its own independence.

Il manifesto sees itself today as a critical left-wing daily newspaper.

The Italian edition of the French monthly newspaper Le Monde diplomatique is available as a paid supplement to il manifesto .

On February 4, 2005, a reporter for the newspaper, Giuliana Sgrena , was abducted in Iraq and, after negotiations, released on March 4.

As the taz reported in an article on January 25, 2014 on page 39, the originally founded cooperative had to file for bankruptcy at the end of 2012, also due to government cuts for cooperative newspapers. However, the workforce managed to found a new cooperative and to secure the rights to the name “Il Manifesto” on a rental basis for 26,000 euros per month. The editor-in-chief has been Norma Rangeri since 2010, and the newspaper has 45 journalists and nine administrative staff and continues to appear daily from Tuesday to Sunday.
