Yoshihide Otomo ( Japanese 大 友 良 英 , Otomo Yoshihide ; born August 1, 1959 in Yokohama ) is a Japanese musician and composer .

Life

In 1979 he moved to Tokyo and studied music history there . He learned jazz guitar from the improvisation guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi . Since around 1987 he has appeared in solo programs and in various band projects, the best known of which is Ground Zero , on turntables and electric guitars . By 2007 he was involved in over 200 publications. His musical focus is in the area of new improvisation music , where he caused a sensation primarily with his radical electronics . The addition of electronic equipment to the guitar led him more and more to the art of reduction . While in the early groups it was the sheer force of the sounds that impressed, for Otomo the focus is now on filtering and working out certain qualities of the sounds. His delicate soundscapes have recently made people think less of free jazz than of composers like Morton Feldman . He also plays in more traditional rock and jazz projects (e.g. with his New Jazz Ensemble ).

In 1999 he curated the Music Unlimited Festival in Wels under the title “Mottomo Otomo” .

In his numerous collaborations he worked with Merzbow , Luc Ferrari , Christian Marclay , John Zorn and Yamatsuka Eye, among others . For the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2005 he put together a quartet with the electronics technician Sachiko M , the trumpeter Axel Dörner and the percussionist Martin Brandlmayr at the suggestion of Reinhard Kager , the director of the Now Jazz series of the SWR2 .
