Muhammad Boudiaf ( Arabic محمد بوضياف, DMG Muḥammad Bū-Ḍiyāf ; * June 23, 1919 ; † June 29, 1992 in Annaba ), also known as Si Tayeb el Watani , was a leading Algerian politician who was president of the country in 1992.

Life

Boudiaf was one of the co-founders of the National Liberation Front of Algeria ( FLN ), which won the country's independence from France during the Algerian War . Boudiaf founded the underground party Parti de la Révolution Socialiste (PRS) in 1962 , which was persecuted by the FLN regime. Boudiaf was imprisoned soon after the PRS was established. He was later released and went into exile in Morocco , where he stayed in Kenitra for 27 years before returning to his homeland in February 1992 at the request of the Algerian military . He became chairman of the High Council of State of Algeria. This collective leadership body was set up under the control of the military after the military canceled the elections because of the expected victory of the opposition, which sparked the Algerian civil war. Since Boudiaf was not involved in current power struggles because of his long time in exile, he was considered a non-partisan figure of integration. His term in office only lasted a few months, however, as he was murdered on June 29, 1992 by one of his bodyguards while giving a speech in Annaba.

The assassin Lembarek Boumaârafi was seen as an Islamist acting alone . He was sentenced to death in a closed trial , but not executed . In addition to the official version, there is also the assumption that the murder was initiated by the military. Shortly before his death, Boudiaf had begun cracking down on corruption and dismissed a number of senior military officials from their posts.

Ali Kafi followed him in the presidency .
