Abdelmadjid Tebboune ( Arabic عبد المجيد تبون, DMG ʿAbd al-Maǧīd Tabbūn ; Born November 17, 1945 in Méchria , Naama Province , French Algeria ) is an Algerian politician . He has been the incumbent President of Algeria since December 19, 2019 , after having been Prime Minister in 2017 .

Life

Tebboune graduated from the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in Algiers and then entered the civil service. First he was General Secretary of the Province ( Wilāya ) Djelfa from April 18, 1975 to October 1, 1977 and then Secretary General of the Adrar Province between 1977 and 1979 , before he was General Secretary of the M'Sila Province from 1979 to January 30, 1983 . On January 30, 1983 he replaced Abdelkrim Bouderghouma as governor ( Wālī ) of Adrar province and held this post until he was replaced by Abdelmalek Sellal on May 13, 1984. He then took over from Mohamed Seghir Hamrouchi on May 13, 1984 the post as governor of the province of Tiaret , which he held until his replacement by Rabah Boubertakh on July 26, 1989. He then acted as the successor to Ahmed El Ghazi from July 26, 1989 to August 21, 1991 as governor of the province of Tizi Ouzou , whereupon Mostefa Benmansour succeeded him. He was also Assistant Minister for Local Communities in the government of Prime Minister Sid Ahmed Ghozali from June 18, 1991 to February 22, 1992 .

On December 23, 1999, Tebboune, who is a member of the National Liberation Front FLN (Front de Liberation Nationale) , became Minister for Culture and Communication in the government of Prime Minister Ahmed Benbitour and held this office until June 26, 2000. In the first government of Prime Minister Ali Benflis that followed , he served from June 26, 2000 to May 21, 2001 again as Assistant Minister for Local Communities and was then in the second government of Prime Minister Benflis between May 31, 2001 and May 4, 2001 June 2002 Minister for Housing and Urban Planning. From September 3, 2012 to May 25, 2017, he also held the office of Minister for Housing and Urban Planning in the first, second, third and fourth governments of Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal . In the fourth Sellal government, he also acted as acting minister of trade between January 19 and May 25, 2017.

As the successor to Abdelmalek Sellal, Tebboune finally took over the office of Prime Minister of Algeria on May 25, 2017 . Just a few months later, however, on August 17, 2017, Ahmed Ouyahia of the National Democratic Collection RND (Rassemblement National Démocratique) took over the position of Prime Minister for the fourth time.

On September 27, 2019, Tebboune announced that it would run for the presidential election postponed to December 12, 2019 . Although a long-time member of the ruling FLN party, Tebboune ran as an independent candidate.

In the election on December 12th, he received 58.15% of the votes in the first ballot and thus the required absolute majority. On December 19, 2019, Tebboune was finally sworn in as President of Algeria.
