Abdelhamid Brahimi
Abdelhamid Brahimi (actually Janu Abdelhamid Brahimi ; Arabic عبد الحميد براهيمي, DMG ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd Barāhīmī ; * April 2, 1936 in Constantine ) was Prime Minister of Algeria from 1984 to 1988 .
As the successor to Mohamed Ben Ahmed Abdelghani , Brahimi was appointed Prime Minister by President Chadli Bendjedid on January 22, 1984 .
Economic and social problems intensified during his reign. Falling revenues from the oil business and a high birth rate led to high unemployment . Youth unemployment in particular increased rapidly. After economic reforms had been announced in October 1988, this led to massive unrest that gripped the entire country - with the exception of the East and Kabylia . Hundreds of people were shot and thousands arrested. As a scapegoat for these incidents, Brahimi was released on November 5, 1988 and replaced by Kasdi Merbah .
