Kasdi Merbah ( Arabic قاصدي مرباح; * April 16, 1938 in Beni Yenni; actual name Abdallah Khalef ; † August 22, 1993 in Algiers ) was Prime Minister of Algeria from 1988 to 1989 .

Life

Kasdi Merbah joined the FLN as a high school student during the Algerian War . He belonged to the faction of Houari Boumedienne . After the country gained independence, he was head of the military intelligence service. In 1965 he was involved in the overthrow of Ahmed Ben Bella .

He later studied law and became a lawyer. At first he served Houari Boumedienne loyally and after his death became a companion of Chadli Bendjedid . This owed him his support and gave him important positions in the army , where he made it to the rank of colonel. He was Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in the 1980s and Minister of Health from February to November 1988. Since Chadli needed a loyal man for economic reforms, he initially deposed the government of Abdelhamid Brahimi and appointed Merbah Prime Minister on November 5, 1988. Because of popular unrest and strikes against his economic policy, he was dismissed on September 9, 1989 and replaced by Mouloud Hamrouche .

The former head of government was shot dead by strangers (Islamists or ex-military) on August 22, 1993 in the course of the Algerian civil war in Algiers, along with his son and brother.
