Abdelkader Bensalah ( Arabic عبد القادر بن صالح, DMG ʿAbd al-Qādir b. Ṣāliḥ ; * November 24, 1941 in Felaoussene ; †  September 22, 2021 ) was an Algerian politician . He was the interim president of Algeria from April 2 to December 19, 2019 . He was a member of the National Democratic Collection , which is considered centrist.

Life

Abdelkader Bensalah was born in 1941 near Tlemcen in what was then French-occupied Algeria. Other sources state Bensalah was in Morocco born and have in the Algerian war obtain the Algerian citizenship. He took part in the Algerian independence movement. Bensalah worked from 1970 to 1974 as the director of the Beirut Center for Information and Culture. Then he returned to Algeria and wrote for the state newspaper El Chaâb for three years . In 1977 he was elected representative of the Tlemcen Province and held this post for ten years. In 1989 he was named ambassador to AlgeriaSent to Saudi Arabia and stayed there until 1993. From 1997 to 2002 he was President of the National People's Assembly and shortly thereafter became President of the National Council .

After the increasing withdrawal of Abd al-Aziz Bouteflika in 2019, Bensalah took over the seat in the Arab League for the absent president. Bensalah was President of the Upper Chamber of Parliament from 2002. In this office he was constitutionally incumbent president for a transitional phase after the resignation of the president. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in early April 2019 after continued popular protests. According to Algerian state television, both houses of parliament confirmed Abdelkader Bensalah as acting president by a large majority. According to the Algerian constitution, the interim president must organize new elections for the office of president within 90 days. He himself is not allowed to take part in the election. In the presidential elections in Algeria in 2019 was Abdelmadjid Tebboune elected successor. He took office on December 19, 2019.

Bensalah died in September 2021 at the age of 79, five days after the death of Abd al-Aziz Bouteflika.
