The National Council ( Arabic مجلس الأمة, DMG Maǧlis al-Umma ; French Conseil de la nation ) is the upper house of the Parliament of Algeria . The National Council consists of 144 members, 46 of whom are directly appointed by the President and 96 are elected indirectly by the people through provincial councils. The regular term of office is six years, but the appointed members are changed after three years.

history

The National Council was established as part of a constitutional amendment in 1996. Before that, the country's legislature was a unicameral system . It exists alongside the National People's Assembly and can change legal texts.
