In May 2008, Bougerra Soltani was re-elected as party leader of the Mouvement de la Société de la Paix - in contrast to Abdelmadjid Menasra, who rejects Soltani's participation in the Presidential Alliance as a minister without a portfolio and blames him for the decline in voters.

Soltani’s policy of support for Bouteflika, especially with regard to seeking a third term for the president, resulted in the resignation of some members and the resignation of eight Hamas members of parliament. A new Islamist party split off on April 16, 2009 under the name “Movement for Preaching and Change”.
