In the parliamentary elections in Algeria in 2007 , which took place on May 17, more than 20 parties and around 100 independent lists with a total of over 12,000 candidates competed for the 389 seats in the lower house of parliament ( Assemblée populaire nationale ). Almost 19 million eligible voters were called upon to cast their votes in the more than 42,000 electoral offices.

The election was overshadowed by bomb attacks in the run-up and took place under strict security precautions. The Islamic Salvation Front was not allowed to vote; Islamist groups such as the North African al-Qaida cell called for an election boycott, and the most important party in the Berber regions in north-east Algeria ( Front Socialist Forces ) also boycotted the election. For this reason, and because of the general low level of public confidence in politics, observers forecast low turnout. The election itself was peaceful.

Foreign Algerians cast their votes the day before, and nomads in remote regions were also able to vote earlier in mobile election offices. A total of 6,662,383 voters cast their vote, which corresponds to a turnout of 35.51%. As expected by observers, the “Presidential Alliance” led by the National Liberation Front (FLN) , which supports President Abd al-Aziz Bouteflika , emerged as the clear winner with 249 seats; the presidential alliance also included the National Democratic Collection and the Islamic Society's Movement for Peace (Hamas).
