This enabled President Abdelaziz Bouteflika of the Front de Liberation Nationale to run for a third term. The House of Commons approved the motion to lift the limit on November 12, 2008.
Candidates
Thirteen people had applied to be admitted as candidates for election, ultimately six candidates were admitted:
- Abdelaziz Bouteflika , incumbent
- Louisa Hanoune
- Moussa Touati
- Mohammed Said
- Djahid Younsi
- Ali Fawzi Rebaine
Opposition boycott and doubts about the count
The important opposition parties Rassemblement pour la Culture et la Démocratie (RCD) and the Front des Forces Socialistes (FFS) did not run in protest against Bouteflika and called for a boycott of the vote. Observers speak of polling stations that are almost extinct. Despite this, voter turnout is officially stated to be 74.54%.
