The National Assembly has its seat in the capital Port Louis .

elections

The last election took place on December 10, 2014. It is the 11th election since independence. Previously, since 1886, a Legislative Council consisted of the governor, elected and appointed members. The elections are considered free.

Suffrage

The elections for the National Assembly are held in 20 constituencies with 3 seats and one constituency with 2 seats. Each voter has as many votes as there are mandates in the constituency. The 61 candidates with the most votes are elected. In addition to these 62 elected MPs, there are also 7 “Best Loosers” MPs. The electoral commission selects these candidates from those candidates who came in fourth or fifth place in the constituencies. The election is made by the electoral commission, which is supposed to achieve a more even distribution of the mandates among the population groups. Therefore, the candidates can be classified as Muslim, Hindu or General Population (otherwise they are listed as "not declared").

Citizens of the Commonwealth who have been resident in Mauritius for at least 2 years are eligible to vote. The minimum age is 18 years.
