People's House of Representatives

The People's House of Representatives ( Amharic የሕዝብ ተወካዮች ምክር trans , transcribed Yehizbtewekayoch Mekir Bet , or Parlama for short ; also Council of Representatives of the Nations or House of Representatives of the Nations ) is the lower house of the Federal Parliamentary Assembly of Ethiopia ( Amharic Shengo ), the bicameral parliament of Ethiopia .

Like the Federal Council, it is a chamber of the Ethiopian parliament. The building of the House of Representatives of the Peoples is located in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and was established in 1995.

The working language is Amharic . However, each individual MP has the right to express his or her own opinions and views in their own language. The People's House of Representatives has a maximum of 550 members of parliament (currently there are 546), most of whom are directly elected by the people for a term of five years , and of which 22 are reserved for representatives of smaller national minorities.

Its powers include the election of the President for a period of six years and the convening of proposed candidates for government members in the Council of Ministers. In addition, it has the power to appoint the President and Vice-President of the Supreme Federal Court of Justice as well as the other judges for federal affairs.
