Parliamentary elections in Ethiopia in 1995
The parliamentary elections in Ethiopia in 1995 were the first elections since the establishment of the House of Representatives and at the same time the first general election in the history of Ethiopia .
After the dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam left the country, a national conference was convened in July 1991, which led to the interim government of Ethiopia . The elections were organized on January 5, 1995 by the National Electoral Authority of Ethiopia and ran from May 7 to June 18, 1995. The elections in the regions of Afar , Somali and Harar were postponed to June 18 to bring in experienced personnel to resolve possible conflicts and irregularities.
Although it was Ethiopia's first multi-party parliamentary election, numerous opposition parties boycotted the parliamentary elections, including the Oromo Liberation Front , the All-Amhara People's Organization and the Ethiopian Democratic Unity Party, which has existed since 1974 .
Results
The political coalition Revolutionary Democratic Front of the Ethiopian Peoples, consisting of four parties, such as the People's Liberation Front in Tigray , the National Democratic Movement of the Amhars , the Democratic Organization of the Oromo People and the Democratic Movement of the South Ethiopian Peoples , won the elections to the Ethiopian Parliament by a huge margin. Only 46 of the 548 parliamentary seats went to the opposition, 11 were not registered for election and 8 became non-party MPs.
